The Philippine ‘Calesa’
Philippine ‘Calesa’ or “Kalesa” (sometimes called a karitela) is a carriage being pulled by a horse. This was one of the modes of transportation introduced in the Philippines in the 18th century by the Spaniards that only nobles and high ranked officials could afford. Philippine ‘Calesa’ considered as one of the oldest mode of transportaion in our country, of which our ancestors love to ride viewing the beautiful scenic spots.

Calesa flourished most to Big Spanish Cities before, such as Ciudad de Cebú (Cebu, 1571), Manila, Nueva Segovia (Lal-lo, year 1595), La Ciudad de Cáceres (Naga, year 1575). The Kalesas can also be found in Intramuros and Binondo in the city of Manila and also in Iligan City, which has a street where decorated kalesas can be taken for a ride. In Cagayan, kalesas are common, especially in Tuao and many other municipalities. In Tuguegarao City, they are mixed in traffic with private cars, motorcycles, sidecar motorcycles, jeepneys, trucks, and bicycles.
The “Calesa” is designed with Filipino style decorated with some Philippine stuffs and painted with some of the Philippine beautiful scenery. It consist of wooden cart or carriage and a single or couple of horse/s. A kalesa looks like an inclined cart. It has two round wheels on each side and two rows of seats that can accommodate four persons. The driver sits on a block of wood located at the front of the cart near the horse.
The driver is commonly called as “Cochero” or “Kutsero“, driving without license. My grandfather is a former Kalesa driver, he who introduces and let me experience the life riding on the ‘Calesa’ on my childhood days. I often see him with “sumbrero” or hat, t-shirt, and long pants. He also reins the horse with some words, when he direct the horse to turn right he say “mano” and he say “silla” to direct the horse to turn left.
Today, our Philippine ‘Calesa’ still survives despite of the fact that our cities and municipalities are flocked with steel auto cars.
The ‘Calesa’ Business
Calesa is for short distance passenger service. Due to its low speed, the calesa is a favored mode for sightseeing in selected tourist destinations. Today cost of Calesa ordinary ride fare in Tuguegaro city is 9 pesos, while at Manila going rate for a kalesa trip is P250 and in Vigan CALESA TOUR PACKAGE cost Php 500/head for adults and Php 300/head for students. Many times Kalesa are hired for the transport of bamboos, cavans of rice and other heavy products for commercial use.
The calesa owner usually bring home an income ranging 200 to 500 pesos daily. Cocheros fed their horses from free grasses in the fields or cheap “darak” or rice bran.

This is the call for every Filipino in the Philippines and everybody who read this blog article. This will be an eye opener to those people who live in the Northern Philippines. A call for environmental protection.
Illegal logging a major factor in flood devastation of Philippines.
We are in the region that usually hit by typhoons. Most of the time, we are flooded due to huge scale of illegal logging activities in the of Province Isabela.
Today, we’ll see more of these drastic floods if we don’t make any move to stop this “illegal logging”.
We must, stand and call for environmental protection!
Decades of illegal logging, unusually high rainfall and geography have all contributed to the devastation wrought by storms that have lashed the Philippines, the government and environmentalists say.
Geography has played its part too. The Philippine archipelago of some 7,000 islands sits astride Southeast Asia’s typhoon belt and is usually the first country to be hit by typhoons from the Pacific Ocean.
Illegal logging was the main cause, of this flash floods.
The series of landslides and flashfloods that hit several parts of the country should serve as a wake up call for us to join hands and stand in preserving our environment.
Do you have concern for the environment?
Definition of concern – something that interests you because it is important or affects you; a feeling of sympathy for someone or something; a matter that relates to or affects one.
The continued destruction of Sierra Madre, will certainly affect lives of the peoples in the valley, their crops and farms will be always destroyed, more people will experience hunger and death.
Try to count the trees…
Where have all the trees gone…?
Do you care?

Residents of Isabela province are expected to join hands on Saturday for an environmental protection campaign in San Mariano town following a call for support by the Diocese of Ilagan.
In his letter read over the Sunday masses, Bishop Joseph Nacua asked Isabela residents “to show our concern most especially in Isabela regarding the issue of illegal logging that has contributed to the decimation of our forests resources.”

Cagayan made a big fight against illegal logging!
Illegal logging in Cagayan down by 90%, says environment officer!
TUGUEGARAO, Philippines – If a community environment officer in the northern province of Cagayan is to be believed, the snippets of good news coming from the anti-illegal logging front breathes a fresh air of hope to people fighting for the preservation of the country’s few remaining lush forest cover.A report from the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) of Sanchez Mira town have shown that incidences of timber poaching seemed to have slowed down as evidenced by the slump in recorded arrests by the local police.Vicente Bayucan, Cenro head of Sanchez Mira, said the downtrend in the apprehension of trucks loaded with suspected illegally cut logs plying the northern parts of the province has fallen to about 90 percent.
In a radio interview, Bayucan stated that to date, joint efforts by the police and the illegal logging task force in their area have bagged only about 1,000 board feet compared to the nearly 10,000 board feet of poached lumber apprehended in December of last year.
“The help of concerned citizens, local officials and the vigilance of the anti-illegal logging task force have helped a lot in our campaign against the proliferation of timber poaching,” said Bayucan, adding that most of the apprehended trucks loaded with contraband came from neighboring Apayao province, passing through the town of Pamplona.
